Christine Sharer began her professional life as a university professor, theatre director, and costume designer. After graduate work at Northwestern University, she joined the faculty of Loyola University in Chicago, launching a sixteen-year career in the theatre. During the back-to-the-land movement in the 1970’s, while teaching and directing at the University of Maine at Farmington, she and her husband lived off the grid in a log cabin on 100 acres of backwoods forest and farm - a unique experience for two unprepared Chicago urbanites and the motivation for A Road Less Traveled, her memoir of those years.


They moved west to Salt Lake City in 1985 with their two young sons, where Christine helped found the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Utah. She became its first chief executive and led the organization for the next two decades as it evolved from a handful of volunteers into a thriving Utah institution. After retirement from the Foundation, she worked as a consultant to several dozen nonprofits in the Intermountain West, many of them start-ups with a passionate leader, like the fictional organization portrayed in Stronger in Broken Places. During those years, she spent some time in Southeastern Utah with one of her nonprofit clients, camping nearby to conserve resources for that small organization with its big dream of a hands-on museum interpreting the Kaiparowits Plateau. It was her brief sojourn there that suggested the setting for this book, her first novel.
